Coast Watchers Pilot Program

July 13, 2022: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join Huron Pines in our pilot year for a new community science shoreline monitoring program. We are partnering with our friends at the Lake Huron Coastal Centre in Goderich, Ontario to bring Coast Watchers to Northeast Michigan. As a part of the Lake Huron Forever initiative, this program will support a lake-wide partnership.

We are looking for 10-20 people to join a dedicated group that will monitor sections of the Lake Huron shoreline on a weekly basis to gather data and help Huron Pines, our partners and local leaders make decisions in managing these important places. You will be measuring air and water temperature, observing seasonal changes, looking for sensitive species and keeping an eye out for invasive species. With this being our pilot year, you will be helping us to determine if this is a program and partnership that works for our local communities and can be expanded in coming years.

The first training will be held virtually on July 13th from 4:00 to 5:00pm. This will give you an idea of what the program will be like and what we will be asking of our volunteers in the first year. This will be followed up by an in-person training on July 21st at Starlite Beach in Alpena. More details will be sent out after you register.

If this is of interest to you and you live in Alpena, East Tawas, Tawas City, or Rogers City, please email Maddie (maddie@huronpines.org) for more information and to register.

The skills you will take away from this program can be applied to your own property and will benefit our local waters, forests and wildlife. Let us know if you have any questions and we look forward to bringing this program to Northeast Michigan.
