Herman Vogler Conservation Area
Saturday, July 16, 2022
8am – 12pm
Meet at the Herman Vogler Parking Area.
We’ll be cutting down invasive honeysuckle and applying herbicide to the stumps. We need volunteers to help transport brush to remove it from the area.
Invasive honeysuckle is a problem in many of our natural areas because it displaces native plants, reducing critical food sources for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. This event will help Herman Vogler Conservation Area’s forest system by allowing natural regeneration of tree seedlings that are outcompeted by the invasive honeysuckle. Trout River will also benefit from our removal efforts as the native understory species which occur along the waterway provide greater structure for fish habitat and deeper rooting to provide stabilization of the river banks.
Work gloves and long sleeves are recommended.
This event is supported in part by the Michigan Invasive Species Grant program and Consumers Energy Foundation.
This is part of the Protect Wild Places event series established to empower Michigan communities to support the land and water to restore 5,000 acres of wildlife habitat and recreational land, and 150 miles of waterways and Great Lakes shoreline.
