Kirtland’s Warbler Weekend—June 3-4, 2016

After a successful return to Northeast Michigan last summer, Kirtland’s Warbler Weekend is back and ready for another great turnout in 2016! Held in downtown Roscommon, and including numerous activities showcasing the Kirtland’s Warbler and our other living treasures, this is a weekend of fun for the whole family!

Kirtland’s Warbler Weekend begins with the Kirtland’s Warbler Home Opener hosted by the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance on Friday, June 3 at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center on beautiful Higgins Lake. The program runs from 6:30pm-9:00pm and includes a silent auction, presentation by Dr. Nathan Cooper of the Smithsonian Institute on migration routes of the Kirtland’s Warbler, and beer and wine served by Roscommon’s own Fifth Street Market! Cost is $25 with proceeds going to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation programs. To purchase your ticket, call (989) 448-2293 x21 or email

Festivities continue on Saturday, June 4 with the Kirtland’s Warbler Festival at the Community Recreation, Activities and Fitness (C.R.A.F.) Center. The Kirtland’s Warbler Festival will include a wide array of nature-based activities developed around the official theme “Healthy Habitats. Healthy Communities.” From Kirtland’s Warbler tours in the jack pine forest and presentations about bird feeders and rare wildlife of Northeast Michigan, to a 5K race and kayak trip, the Festival aims to highlight and embody the connections that are formed between one’s community and the natural world surrounding it. Buttons for the festival are $5 per person or $10 for a family and are available at the following locations:

  • Higgins Lake-Roscommon Chamber of Commerce
  • Village of Roscommon
  • Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau, Houghton Lake
  • Hartwick Pines State Park, Grayling
  • Huron Pines, Gaylord
  • US Forest Service Ranger Station, Mio

Au Sable River Kayak Tour meets at 2:00pm June 4 at Campbell’s Canoe Livery
The 2016 Kirtland’s Warbler Festival will once again host a guided trip down the south branch of the Au Sable River from Campbell’s Canoe Livery to Steckert Bridge Road landing. This approximately two-hour trip will take paddlers along a pristine stretch of this spring-fed river, where we will learn about the connections between the upland jack pine ecosystems and the beautiful rivers that carve their way through the landscape. Kayaks can be rented for $18 and canoes for $27 and reservations should be made with Campbell’s directly at (989) 275-5810; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to  the Kirtland’s Warbler Festival for its continued success. Basic experience with river kayaking is recommended and inquiries can be directed to the tour coordinator Maggie Petersen at (231) 632-0846
