Celebrating North Point Nature Preserve
We welcomed 130 friends, supporters and neighbors on Saturday, June 10 for a grand opening celebration of North Point Nature Preserve.
Guests learned about the geological & human history of the peninsula and its ecological significance to the Great Lakes region as they toured two stops along the preserve’s unspoiled coast.
We saw threatened Pitcher’s thistle growing on the dunes, found fossils and puddingstones along the cobble shoreline, and experienced the sudden changes in weather which Thunder Bay is known for as the first rain in weeks closed out our final tour of the day.
The preserve was acquired by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2017 and transferred to Huron Pines as the permanent landowner at the end of 2022. It is home to 1,384 acres of forested wetlands, 4 miles of undeveloped shoreline and rare ecosystems found only along the Great Lakes.
Thank you to the Alpena community and to all who joined us in christening our newest preserve. Special thanks go to our colleagues at TNC in Michigan and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary for their support in protecting and sharing this wonderful place, and to DTE Energy Foundation for sponsoring the event.
