Clean Water

Northern Michigan’s identity is shaped by water. Tourism, recreation, environmental health and community well-being are all tied to water quality. Huron Pines works closely with local governments, residents and partner organizations to plan and implement clean water solutions in communities across Northeast Michigan.

Here are some examples of our work

  • Huron Pines partners with cities to conduct city-wide stormwater assessments and implement nature-based solutions for stormwater management. Green stormwater infrastructure concepts could include rain gardens, oil and grit separators in storm drains, planter boxes, green roofs, and porous and permeable pavement.

  • Huron Pines collaborates with communities to host visioning sessions in order to explore options for green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) to help capture and filter runoff in coastal communities.

  • Our staff members are trained to survey for and protect some of Michigan’s most sensitive and rare species — Hungerford’s crawling water beetle and Michigan’s native freshwater mussels. These organisms have intrinsic value to ecosystems, and serve as bioindicators for stream health.

  • Huron Pines is taking a leading role in the Obtawaing Biosphere Region (OBR) Partner Network. In 2021, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the region as a globally significant ecological and cultural landscape. The OBR is at the convergence of the Upper and Lower peninsulas, and Lakes Michigan, Superior and Huron.
