Join Huron Pines for the upcoming piping plover monitoring season (May through August). This kickoff event welcomes both seasoned monitors and newcomers interested in contributing to conservation efforts along the Lake Huron coastline.
As a volunteer monitor, you'll learn to identify these endangered shorebirds and report sightings to the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team. No prior experience or equipment is needed - just your enthusiasm and willingness to help! Our goal is to increase monitoring coverage along the Lake Huron shoreline to enhance our data collection efforts.
During this event, Huron Pines staff will provide a recap on the 2024 monitoring season, refresh volunteers on the monitoring protocol and present what is needed for the 2025 season. A comprehensive overview of the Great Lakes Piping Plover Monitoring handbook will be provided, giving returning volunteers a helpful refresher and new volunteers the knowledge they need to get started. This is also a great opportunity to connect with other local volunteers who share your passion for protecting these rare birds.
Come be part of this important conservation initiative that's helping to secure the future of piping plovers in Northern Michigan!

We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. We recognize that accessibility is not always possible in every area of our work. Our efforts are ongoing. Through a commitment to continued learning and understanding, we will strengthen our awareness of the barriers and inequities that exist at the individual and community levels, in order to advance more equitable opportunities to experience the outdoors in our region.
