Join Huron Pines for our annual Spring Salamander Survey at Emily Min Hunt Preserve. This family-friendly event will include a short walk (.15mi) to one of the preserve’s wetlands where participants will assist Huron Pines staff in collecting salamanders and taking measurements.
This effort in community-driven science helps us gauge the health of the unique ecosystems found at the preserve by monitoring the abundance of amphibians in their native habitat. Over time, this data will inform us of trends in forest health, how we can adapt our management strategies, and help us determine how our forests are changing as the climate warms.
No prior experience is necessary. Participants should be prepared for wet conditions and to be outdoors for the duration of the event. The survey will occur whether rain or shine. If temperatures on the day of the event are below 40 degrees, the survey will be canceled. There are no bathrooms on site.
Because of the sensitive nature of amphibians, this event is limited to 24 attendees.
If you have any questions, please email our Land Protection Coordinator, Julia Butch (julia@huronpines.org).
We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. It is a priority for Huron Pines to ensure that our communications and programming are available and accessible to everyone. Please contact maddie@huronpines.org if you have any questions about accessibility or believe barriers remain.
We recognize that accessibility is not always possible in every area of our work. Our efforts are ongoing. Through a commitment to continued learning and understanding, we will strengthen our awareness of the barriers and inequities that exist at the individual and community levels, in order to advance more equitable opportunities to experience the outdoors in our region.
