Conservation Value

Birdsong Bay hosts a great diversity of migratory birds in spring and fall, including trumpeter swans, ducks, geese, shorebirds, raptors & more.

Protected coastal wetlands are essential to maintaining the water health of Lake Huron. Natural shorelines, and wetlands in particular, are resilient to high lake levels, storm surges and climate-related events.

History and Future

The preserve’s namesake, Richard J Poljan, was an architect for Huron-Clinton Metroparks and worked for Ford Motor Company before retiring in 1996.

Poljan acquired the property from the Michigan DNR in 2011 through public auction. He died in July 2022.

According to his family, Poljan wanted this property to be protected and shared with the community. Ownership was transferred to Huron Pines in December 2022.

Activities

Please note: Because of wet conditions and the sensitive nature of natural habitats found here, recreational activities are limited.
