Shoreline Monitoring Information Session

Join us to learn about the shoreline community science monitoring opportunities we are offering this year. During this virtual session, we will provide detailed information to help you assess if these programs aligns with your interests and to understand the expectations, responsibilities, and time commitment involved. Following this information session, an in-person onboarding training will be held on April 19th for Coast Watchers and May 2nd for piping plover monitors.

Coast Watchers

Coast Watchers are part of a dedicated group that monitors sections of the Lake Huron shoreline on a weekly basis from May to October to gather data and help Huron Pines, our partners and local leaders make decisions in managing these important places.

Piping Plover Monitors

We are looking to expand the network of piping plover monitors during the nesting season. Volunteers will learn how to identify piping plovers and report sightings to the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team. There is no prior experience or supplies needed. Priority locations, based on previous nesting locations, are Tawas and Oscoda.

REGISTRATION OPENING SOON

We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. It is a priority for Huron Pines to ensure that our communications and programming are available and accessible to everyone. Please contact maddie@huronpines.org if you have any questions about accessibility or believe barriers remain.

We recognize that accessibility is not always possible in every area of our work. Our efforts are ongoing. Through a commitment to continued learning and understanding, we will strengthen our awareness of the barriers and inequities that exist at the individual and community levels, in order to advance more equitable opportunities to experience the outdoors in our region.

Huron Pines is leading the effort to inspire lakeshore communities in Michigan to join the Lake Huron Forever initiative. Projects like land protection and community engagement serve to activate collaboration and partnerships to sustain a healthy Lake Huron. The Lake Huron Forever initiative is supported by Bay Area Community Foundation, Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, Community Foundation Grey Bruce, Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network and Sunset Community Foundation.
